The Unexpected Mistake That Stops You Making It Your Own
Buy the right course, and the money is supposed to follow. That is the promise sitting behind most online training sold today, from the free ones right up to the expensive ones.
It is not true, and if you have something still sitting half finished on your computer, you already know it.
Most courses are honest about what they teach. What they rarely tell you is that the learning only turns into income once you make it your own.
People write to me and say things like I need to change my life style financially, or how can I start to earn an extra income. Fair questions, every one of them.
But buying the training was never going to answer either one on its own. What changes things is what you do with it afterwards. That is the gap I see most often with people starting out.
Make it your own, and it starts to work. Leave it exactly as you found it, and it never will. That single shift is what this whole article is about.
The Training Looks The Same To Everyone Who Bought It
Here is something worth sitting with. The course you bought this month is the exact same course bought by hundreds, maybe thousands, of other people.
Same modules. Same examples. Same advice, word for word.
Nick James, who has spent years teaching people how to build a business from home, puts it plainly when it comes to licensed products. A product looks and reads exactly like every other copy sold under the same licence, until someone adds something that is unmistakably theirs.
The same is true of any training you buy, licensed or not. Nobody gets an advantage just from owning it.
The advantage comes from what you do with it once it is yours.
Courses Teach You. Practice Makes You Proficient.
I learned this before I ever owned a computer, back when I was training as a hairdresser. It is much the same lesson anyone building an online business learns today.
I invested in courses. Cutting, colouring, perming, and others besides. The courses were good, proper teaching from people who knew their trade.
A perm, for example, is not something you get right by reading about it. You learn the timing and the tension by doing it on real hair, watching what happens, and adjusting the next time.
But becoming proficient at what I had been shown came from putting it into practice, over and over. It came from working on real people with real opinions about the result.
It matters just as much running an online business now as it did standing behind a chair then. Learn from someone who knows what they are doing. Then practise what you have been shown until it is really yours.
Where Most People Quietly Get Stuck
This is the part nobody likes to admit.
It is not that the training was wrong, or that the mentor gave bad advice. It is that the training sits there, waiting, while everyday life gets in the way.
Work, family, worry about money, the fear of getting something wrong. All of it crowds out the one thing that would move you forward, and that one thing is using what you bought.
I know this stuck feeling from my own shelf, not just from watching other people’s. I have bought products myself that sat there gathering dust while I found reasons to put them off. Procrastination does not announce itself. It just quietly becomes the plan.
My mentor Nick James has helped me more than he probably knows, ideas, do this not that, and so on. I still ask him for help when I need it, and he always shows me how to get to the next level. Asking was never easy for me, but it was the one habit that kept things moving when I could easily have stayed stuck.
If you are worried about being made redundant, or carrying the weight of being the only income earner in the house, the stakes feel higher. They feel higher than they would for someone treating this as a hobby. That pressure makes it tempting to buy one more course instead of using the one you already have.
If you are wondering how can I start to earn an extra income, the plain answer is simple. The same goes if you are worrying what will my pension be when I retire. The course sitting on your computer will not answer either question by itself. Only using it will.
What Making It Your Own Looks Like
This does not have to be complicated.
If you bought a guide on writing emails, do not just read it. Write one email this week, in your own words, about something true in your own business. Other articles I have shared recently, including some on getting started without a big learning curve, cover more small steps like this one.
Take the fear out of it by making it short. Three sentences about what happened in your business this week is enough for a first attempt. It will already be more yours than anything in the course manual.
If you bought training on building a list, do not file it away. Set up the one sign-up page it walks you through, even if it is not perfect.
Think of it this way. A sign-up page that is live and slightly rough will teach you more in a week than a perfect one sitting unfinished on your desktop. It keeps working for you while you improve it.
If a mentor showed you a method, use it on your own audience, in your own voice, this week rather than next month.
None of that needs to be finished or polished. It needs to be started, and it needs to be yours.
You Do Not Need To Be Techie To Do This
None of this requires you to become some kind of expert overnight.
If you are not a techie person, you are exactly who this is for. Small, plain steps are easier to take than big, clever ones.
I am dyslexic myself, and I still had to move my whole email system across from one platform to another. It threw me right out of my comfort zone, and I am slow with anything techie. But I am getting a little better each day, and that has been enough.
Every platform looks impossible on the first afternoon and ordinary by the second week.
Ask what you do not understand, and keep believing in yourself a little more each day. That is enough to start.
Make It Yours, One Small Step At A Time
You do not need to overhaul everything you have bought in one sitting.
Pick one course, one guide, one piece of training that has been waiting. Choose a single idea from it and put it into practice this week, nothing more.
Each day another step is still the whole method, however small the step feels.
Then do it again with the next idea, and the one after that. That is what it means to make it your own.
None of this needs grand confidence. It needs one honest hour this week, spent on one small piece of what you already own.
You do not have to finish everything you have bought this month. Just make a start on one piece of it.
Each day another step. That is all this ever needed to be.
Best regards,
Philip
