The Unexpected Way Doing Less Builds A Strong Business
“I need to change my life style finacialy.” That is the exact worry behind so many messages I get, and it almost always arrives wrapped in a long list of things the person thinks they should be doing right now. Build a list. Learn traffic. Write better emails. Find the right product.
Somewhere inside that long list, the actual business gets lost.
I know this one well. Fifty-one years in hairdressing taught me plenty about running a business, but stepping into an online one as a semi-retired beginner brought a whole new kind of overwhelm with it.
The instinct is always to do more. Add another task. Try another platform. Squeeze in one more hour before bed.
What actually moves a business forward is the opposite of that. Narrowing your focus down to a small handful of things, and protecting that focus on purpose, does more for a stalled business than any amount of extra hustle ever will.
The One Question Worth Asking Every Morning
Most businesses are not held back by a hundred separate problems. They are usually held back by one.
Take a plain look at whatever is slowing your own business down right now. It almost always sits in one of three places. A stubborn obstacle, like low traffic or a distraction that keeps pulling your attention away. A doubt that keeps running on repeat, telling you that you are not ready or not clever enough. Or a gap in what you know how to do, like not knowing how to build a list or track what is working for you.
Ask yourself one plain question before you touch anything else. What is the one thing that, if you sorted it today, would move your business forward the most?
Write your answer down. Then act on it before you open anything else.
What is the one thing that, if you sorted it today, would move your business forward the most?
Most people try to fix everything at once and end up fixing nothing. I have done exactly that myself, in the early months of moving my email system across. Pick your one thing, sort it, then find tomorrow’s one thing tomorrow.
Narrow Your Focus Down To Three Things
My mentor Nick James has spoken about narrowing a whole business down to just three things that need to happen, day after day, to bring in the income you actually want. For him that was offers, a list, and traffic. Nothing more.
Every task he did from that point had to fit inside one of those three buckets, or it did not make the cut. A task that helped none of the three got crossed off, however busy it kept him feeling.
You can run that same plain test on your own week. I have set out some of the thinking behind this in other articles I have shared recently, and it keeps proving itself true the more I look at my own working days.
Does each task on your list build an offer, grow your list, or bring you more visitors? If the plain answer is no, that task is not why your business feels stuck. It is why your day feels full while the business itself stays still.
You do not need twelve hours to make real progress. Three hours, spent entirely on the right three things, will outrun twelve scattered hours every single time.
Protect Your Focus On Purpose
Once your three things are clear, protect them. In practice that means saying no to almost everything else that turns up asking for your attention today.
Reschedule anything you are only maybe going to do. If a task will not clearly help one of your three things, let it wait for a day with room for it.
Eliminate whatever adds no real value once you take a plain look at it. Cross it off without spending another minute deciding.
Hand over anything someone else could do as well as you, or better. Your own time only ever moves in one direction, so spend it where only you can spend it.
I still find this the hardest part, if I am being honest with you. I hate asking for help, and moving my own email system across to a new platform pushed me well outside my comfort zone. But each day another step gets a little easier, and doing less of the wrong things left far more room for the right ones.
Finish What You Start
None of this matters if the work never gets finished. There is no such thing as a half done product you can sell to anyone. It is either done, or it is not done.
The gap between almost finished and truly finished can eat more of your time than the whole project that came before it.
Pick the smallest unfinished task sitting closest to your own finish line right now. Give it real time tomorrow. Cross it off completely before you let yourself start anything new.
That single habit, finishing before starting the next thing, is worth more to a small business than any amount of extra effort spread thin across a dozen half done tasks.
As I always say, if you do not try, you will get what you have always got. Trying properly, on a smaller list of things, beats trying half heartedly on a long one.
Where This Naturally Leads
Once you have narrowed your own focus down to a handful of things, the next honest question is whether your business has a clear structure behind those three things, especially the offer itself.
If building and growing that side properly feels like your own next step, Nick James put together a complete course on exactly that called Serious About Six Figures. It walks through building a business around a handful of the right activities rather than a hundred scattered ones, which is the whole point of everything above.
I am recommending it because the thinking behind it matches what I have found useful in my own small business, not because I am promising you a shortcut. If you want to go further with this, it is worth a proper look.
Each Day, Another Step
You do not need a longer day. You need a shorter, sharper one, pointed at fewer things.
Pick your one thing today. Narrow your focus down to the handful that matters. Then carry each one through to done, not almost done.
No one is perfect, and neither am I. But each day another step still gets you further than a busy day spent everywhere at once.
Best regards,
Philip
