The Surprising, True Reason Your Own Experience Is Enough
“I need to change my life style finacialy.” That is the exact line a reader once used with me, spelling and all, and I have never forgotten it, because it is not really a sentence about money. It is a sentence about feeling stuck, waiting for the one big idea that will finally let you start.
Here is what I wish someone had told me sooner. You are not short of an idea. You are short of the belief that your own experience is already enough to begin with.
Fifty-one years behind a hairdresser’s chair taught me plenty about people wanting a fresh start, and almost none of them needed something brand new to get going. They needed to use what they already had, a little more boldly than they had been.
That is the whole of what I want to share with you today.
You Are Waiting For An Idea That Has Already Arrived
Somewhere along the way, most of us picked up the idea that starting something online means inventing a clever new concept nobody has thought of before. That belief keeps a lot of good, useful knowledge sitting quietly unused.
Your own experience is not unused because it is not valuable. It is unused because nobody told you it counted.
You already have what you need to begin. Not the finished business. Just the first small, honest piece of it.
What Fifty-One Years Behind A Chair Taught Me
When I started out in hairdressing, I invested in courses, cutting, colouring, perming, and others. The courses were useful, but real skill came later, once I started putting what they taught me into practice with real clients sitting in the chair in front of me.
I would sit with a client and talk through exactly what they wanted before I touched anything, so I got it right. That listening, and that practice, is what actually made me good at the job, not the certificate on the wall.
I would say the same to anyone starting an online business now. Learn from someone who has done it, and then practise what you have been shown, with your own hands, on your own small project.
Courses Teach You. Practice Makes You Proficient.
I bought courses in hairdressing, and years later I bought courses online too, from my mentor, and from others. None of them did the work for me.
The courses were great, but becoming proficient at what I had been shown came from putting it into practice.
It is a simple idea, but it quietly solves the problem of waiting for the perfect idea before you take a single step. You already did the hard part, you learned something. The next part is just practice.
Your First Small Step Does Not Need To Be Original
I started my own direct mail campaign in February 2025, promoting a free trial package. It was not a new idea. It was someone else’s idea, taught to me, and practised by me.
In April 2025, my first payment came through, $12.50. Then another, $27.50. Small amounts, and no guarantee that your own first step will look anything like mine, this is simply my own experience, not a promise of what yours will be. But that was the moment I believed this could actually work.
It is a leap of faith, starting something like this. And if you do not try, you will get what you have always got.
Where To Look For What You Already Know
Here is where your own experience hides, if you have not thought to look there yet. Something you have done for years without a certificate. A problem you have already solved for a friend, a neighbour, a family member.
Say you spent twenty years keeping a household running on a tight budget, stretching one wage through school uniforms, bills and the repairs nobody plans for. That is not nothing. Somebody who has never had to do it would gladly learn how, and your own experience would be the whole of what you taught them.
A worry you have carried counts too. Financial security, redundancy, what your pension will actually stretch to, that plenty of other people your age are quietly carrying as well. You do not need to feel like an expert to be useful to someone one step behind you.
Think about what people already ask you for advice on, without you ever calling it a skill. A friend who always rings you before a big decision. A neighbour who asks how you managed on one income for years. That is not small talk. That is evidence.
I have written a few more small ideas like this one if you want something else to read when you have a spare ten minutes.
Each day another step. That is all this ever really asks of you. Not a new idea. Just the willingness to use the one you already have.
Best regards
Philip
